Hirokazu Kore-eda's 'Shoplifters'

d’Or winner at the 71st Cannes Film Festival – Japanese drama Shoplifters and critically acclaimed Korean mystery drama
Burning, are making their way to Singapore cinemas this July!
Earlier this May, Director
Hirokazu Kore-eda was presented with the Palme d’Or award, the highest prize awarded at the annual Cannes Film Festival for his film,
Shoplifters. Cannes jury president, Ms Cate Blanchett called it a difficult decision, but the right choice for Palme d’Or. “We were completely bowled over by
Shoplifters. How intermeshed the performances were with the directorial vision.” Ms Blanchett said.
Despite its loss,
Burning left a trailing blaze when it received an average of 3.8 upon 4 stars from Screen’s jury of 10 critics and became the highest-scoring title in the grid’s history.
Helmed by Korean auteur
Lee Chang-Dong, Burning, follows the story of Jongsu, a deliveryman who is out on a job when he runs into Haemi, his childhood friend. She asks if he'd mind looking after her cat while she's away on a trip to Africa. Upon her return, she introduces
to Jongsu an enigmatic young man named Ben, whom she met during her trip. And the trio tumbles into a rabbit hole of mystery… The film stars Korea’s raising actor
Yoo Ah-In (Veteran; The Throne), American-Korean actor Steven Yuen (Walking Dead; Okja) and newcomer actress,
Jeon Jong-Seo.

director, Kore-eda Hirokazu (Like Father, Like Son; After the Storm; The Third Murder). The family drama follows the story of a family of shoplifters who takes in an orphan. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife later agrees to
take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that
unite them… The film stars veteran actor Lily Franky, legendary actress
Kiki Kilin, Sakura Ando, Mayu Matsuoka, Jyo Kairi,
Sasaki Miyu and more!
