Something to smack your lips about this March. Eric Khoo's latest food-themed movie Ramen Teh will open on 29 March in Singapore. A Japanese, Singapore and French co-production helmed by auteur Eric Khoo, Ramen Teh features an ensemble of top stars from both Singapore and Japan including - Japanese heartthrob –
Takumi Saitoh 斎藤工, the legendary international superstar
Seiko Matsuda 松田圣子, Singapore’s multifaceted top-comedian
Mark Lee 李国煌 and popular actress
Jeanette Aw 欧萱.
According to Eric, it is his most personal film to date (so food's the way to his heart we guess!) A Singapore, Japanese and French co-production,
“Ramen Teh” tells the story of Masato (Takumi Saitoh斎藤工) a young ramen chef in the city of Takasaki in Japan. After the sudden
death of his emotionally distant father, he chances upon a suitcase of memorabilia and a red notebook - filled with musings and old photos - left behind by his Singaporean mother (Jeanette Aw
欧萱), who died when he was just 10 years old.
Acting on a hunch, he takes off for Singapore with the notebook, hoping to piece together the story of his life, as well as that of his parents’. There he meets Miki, (Seiko Matsuda松田圣子)
a Japanese food blogger and single mother who helps him track down his maternal uncle Ah Wee (Mark Lee
李国煌), who runs a
Bak Kut Teh (pork rib soup) restaurant.
The film has also been selected to screen at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival's Culinary Cinema, as its world premiere.
Berlin International Film Festival's Culinary Cinema embraces food through the medium of film. Jiro Dreams of Sushi, Chef's Table and I am Love have premiered at this section.
Ramen Teh will be the closing film at Culinary Cinema. The ticket for this screening includes a dinner immediately after the film at the Gropius Mirror, a pop up restaurant under a marquee.
A special 3-course menu inspired by the film, prepared by acclaimed German chef – The
Duc Ngo, will be served to the audience.
“Ramen Teh” is produced by Zhao Wei Films and Wild Orange Artists in association with Clover Films and Bert Pictures; co-distributed by Clover Films
and Golden Village Pictures in Singapore; with support from Ramen Keisuke; and with special thanks to Singapore Tourism Board.
The film will open in Japan in autumn. International sales agent, MK2 (‘A Touch of Sin’, ‘Three Colours’ and ‘The Umbrellas of Cherbourg’) have sold ‘Ramen Shop’ (International title) to 18 territories including
Europe and Asia.
